In it, Bishop John Shelby Spong discusses how the bible has been used throughout history, and today as well, as a social control device which has condoned slavery, murder, genocide, oppression of women, persecution of gays, and harsh punishments for all types of "sins." The bible, Spong contends, if taken as the literal, inerrant word of God, will have the book take on a divine status of its own, thus becoming an instrument of idolatry.
